This past weekend I dropped my kids off at their grandparents in Corpus Christi again for another weeklong stay. The grandparents are in their mid-70′s so long visits work out best if they’re broken up a week at a time. The worn out grandparents need some recovery time. This coming week is football camp (uuchhh); two weeks ago it was a [...]

Back from North Carolina

Sorry it’s been so long since I last posted. It’s not because I haven’t been birding, but more out of laziness and my distraction with an upcoming martial arts test (it’s the biggie – 1st degree black belt and there’s nothing more embarrasing than not knowing your stuff). Anyway, I got back May 11th from my [...]

I know posting has been light lately and I did promise a report on last weekend’s Fennessey Ranch trip, but it’s been kind of crazy work and kid-wise. My kids’ baseball season unfortunately collides each year with spring migration. But, I’m a little excited about something new and different – a whole new area of [...]
Birding Lows…and Highs

Dipping, tanking, coming up empty, a bust. Sucks, bummed, bites, f#$%!ing slow. All the words and colorful phrases I’ve heard (or used myself) to describe a disappointing or uneventful birding day. Kind of like today. After work I headed over to Avenue A in Brackenridge Park to see if any migrants were coming [...]

It’s the first day of Spring today! You wouldn’t know it from the temperature outside though. A really strong cold front blew through San Antonio this morning at 7:00 a.m., dropped the temps into the 50′s and dumped about 3″ of rain on us. Thunder, lightning, hailstones too. There was no sleeping late this morning, and [...]

It’s Spring Break for my kiddos this week, so we took a little road trip out to the Hill Country yesterday, driving from San Antonio to Uvalde, through Concan, over to Fredericksburg and home. My husband said “this is a family drive, not a birding trip”. My husband underestimates the pouty effect of pursed lips and [...]

Yesterday I took a day trip to Victoria, Texas, about 120 miles southeast from my house, to attend the dedication of the first Orthodox Church in Victoria, Texas. My husband’s family also lived in Victoria for about 30 years before retiring to Corpus Christi, so it’s really nice to have any excuse to go back and [...]
Winter at Warbler Woods

Monday, February 15th was the President’s Day holiday and I took advantage of a cold, clear day to go out to one of my favorite, almost local spots, Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary in Schertz, Texas. Warbler Woods, owned by Don and Susan Schaezler and Margie Bonnes, is a 126-acre family farm turned wildlife preserve, in partnership with the Gulf [...]

Sunday, January 31st – Day’s total 50+ species What a difference a day makes! Saturday the 30th was fairly mild and sunny, with a good total of birds (73 species). The 31st – miserably cold, cloudy and windy. Five layers of clothing on top and I still couldn’t get warm. The plan this morning was to [...]
