This past weekend I dropped my kids off at their grandparents in Corpus Christi again for another weeklong stay. The grandparents are in their mid-70′s so long visits work out best if they’re broken up a week at a time. The worn out grandparents need some recovery time. This coming week is football camp (uuchhh); two weeks ago it was a [...]

A Wow Bird at Warbler Woods Sanctuary
Posted in Bird Species, Texas birding sites, tagged Groove-billed Ani, Schertz Texas, Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary on May 18, 2010 | 3 Comments »
This past Saturday the most unexpected bird appeared at Warbler Woods Sanctuary in Schertz, Texas, and some lucky visitors, myself included, got to see great views. It was a Groove-billed Ani and I am kicking myself for not bringing a camera along. I made a quick run out Saturday afternoon following a couple of long Kung [...]

T-minus 26 hours and counting to my 4 am blast-off on a great birding weekend to the coast. On Saturday, April 24th, I’ve got a spot reserved on a birding tour of the Fennessey Ranch, located about 130 miles southeast of my house, between the small towns of Refugio (pronounced “re-fure-e-o”) and Bayside, and less than 20 [...]

Sorry I didn’t get this posted earlier, but it’s never too late for some encouraging news about one of the local birding spots. Jack Judson Nature Trails, located in the small mid-city community of Alamo Heights, may get the greenlight for expansion and improvement. Jack Judson Nature Trails are a series of trails winding through the bottomlands [...]

It’s the first day of Spring today! You wouldn’t know it from the temperature outside though. A really strong cold front blew through San Antonio this morning at 7:00 a.m., dropped the temps into the 50′s and dumped about 3″ of rain on us. Thunder, lightning, hailstones too. There was no sleeping late this morning, and [...]

It’s Spring Break for my kiddos this week, so we took a little road trip out to the Hill Country yesterday, driving from San Antonio to Uvalde, through Concan, over to Fredericksburg and home. My husband said “this is a family drive, not a birding trip”. My husband underestimates the pouty effect of pursed lips and [...]
Winter at Warbler Woods

Monday, February 15th was the President’s Day holiday and I took advantage of a cold, clear day to go out to one of my favorite, almost local spots, Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary in Schertz, Texas. Warbler Woods, owned by Don and Susan Schaezler and Margie Bonnes, is a 126-acre family farm turned wildlife preserve, in partnership with the Gulf [...]

Sunday, January 31st – Day’s total 50+ species What a difference a day makes! Saturday the 30th was fairly mild and sunny, with a good total of birds (73 species). The 31st – miserably cold, cloudy and windy. Five layers of clothing on top and I still couldn’t get warm. The plan this morning was to [...]
Packery Channel Park Improvements?

One of the best birding spots on the central Texas coast, may just be getting better. At the end of January, Nueces County Commissioners endorsed a grant application for half-a- million in Texas Parks & Wildlife funds to improve the birding and wildlife habitat at Packery Channel Park. Packery Channel Park itself has very little of [...]
